Fire Safety Tips

Fire safety education is a vital part of student safety. Mastering fire safety skills not only protects students' personal safety but also raises fire safety awareness among those around them.

Damage of fires

Fires are one of the disasters which occur the mostfrequently and threaten people’s property, lives and the social development. Currently, there are 6 to 7 million fires annually, which cause 65 to 75 thousand people to lose their lives. The loss is still increasing.

Fires on campus

Campus fires are mainly caused by the illegal use of fires, failure of equipment, and the explosion of dangerous chemicals.

Many students use multiple electrical appliances. The electrical load in some buildings may be limited. Some students might pull and connect wires by themselves. Such unprofessional actions might cause short circuit, overload or electric leakage, which will cause fires.

Some students use high-power appliances such as electric heater, electric hair driers, or electric mattress. The unproper use of such appliances will ignite the items around and finally cause fires.

To pull wires out of the windows of tall buildings to charge the electric bicycles might also ignite the exterior insulation material of the buildings and cause inestimable loss.

How to prevent fires

1) To pull and connect wires by yourself is prohibited. It must be done by some professionals.

2) Report to relevant department once any damage to the wires or electric switches is found.

3) The use of appliances must meet the plan and design of the wires. High-power appliances such as electric heaters, electric hair driers, inductions and electric mattress are strictly prohibited in the dorms.

4) Cut off the power while leaving the dorm. Switch off the lights and other appliances while you are away from it.

5) The appliances should be kept away from the flammable materials around and don’t cover them with blankets, beddings or clothes while they are on.

6) Do not discard cigarette butts before completely extinguishing them. The temperature might be 200 to 300 centigrade and it will easily cause fires.

7) Don’t park or charge electric bicycles around tall buildings.

8) Before doing experiments in the labs, check the appliances carefully, especially the power, wires and other accessory equipment. Obey the regulations for experiments and strictly follow the stipulatedprocedure. The remaining experimental chemicals should be put back as required, but don’t take it away or throw it away casually. Cut off the power and sweep away the waste. Do not mix incompatible chemicals or reagents.

What to do in a fire?

1) Press the alarm button on the wall when there is fire.

2) Use the extinguisher around to put out the fire if it is small.

3) If the fire is too big to control, break the emergency chest to get the respirator. Put it on properly and evacuate.

4) Use a wet towel to cover your nose and mouth before evacuating when the respirator is not available. In most cases, what causes death in a fire is not the fire itself, but the smoke.

5) Evacuate quickly in order along the nearest exit. Do remember not to use elevators.

6) During the evacuation, don’t push, don’t try to rescue personal belongings. And don’t pick up the falling items, which might cause stampede.

How to use a fire extinguisher?

When using a fire extinguisher, pay attention to the four-step method of "pull up,hold, press"(pull up the fire extinguisher handle, hold the nozzle aimed at the root of the flame, press the pressure handle to spray the extinguishing agent.)

Others

Do remember not to break or use fire hydrants, extinguishers, smoke detectors and other fire equipment illegally, which is against the Fire Control Law of the People’s Republic of China. Violations will face severe punishment.
